Core betting concepts
Player prop
A bet on an individual player's performance — how many points they'll score, hits they'll get, etc. — rather than the game outcome. EdgeAI focuses exclusively on player props.
OVER / UNDER
The two sides of a prop bet. If the line is 1.5 hits, "OVER" wins if the player gets 2 or more hits; "UNDER" wins if 0 or 1.
Line (sportsbook line)
The number the sportsbook sets for a prop. It's designed to attract roughly equal money on both sides — not to predict the actual outcome.
Edge
The gap between your model's projection and the sportsbook line. If a model projects 1.9 hits and the line is 1.5, you have a +26% edge on the OVER. Edge is what separates sharp bettors from casuals. Note: edge is not a win probability.
Juice (vig, vigorish)
The sportsbook's built-in commission. On a standard -110/-110 prop, you'd need to win ~52.4% of bets just to break even. That 2.4% is the juice.
+EV (positive expected value)
A bet where the expected return is positive after accounting for juice. If your edge is bigger than the juice, you're +EV.
Line movement
How the sportsbook line changes over time as money comes in. Sharp bettors watch line movement to find where the smart money is.
EdgeAI-specific terms
Signal confidence
How consistently recent games support the AI's lean. A 65% signal confidence means 65% of the edge window's games backed the recommended side. Not a win probability.
Model edge
The percentage gap between EdgeAI's projection and the sportsbook line. Displayed with a plus or minus sign.
Best Value (BV)
A pick flagged as having the strongest edge on its game slate. Doesn't mean guaranteed — it means highest projected value relative to line.
High Confidence (HC)
A pick flagged for unusually strong statistical support — the kind that hits at a much higher rate than average in EdgeAI's backtesting.
Edge window
The 15-game window EdgeAI uses as its primary signal against the sportsbook line.
Recent form
The last 10 games. When form has drifted 20%+ from baseline, EdgeAI weights it heavier than baseline.
Baseline
The last 30 games — the player's "normal" rate.
MLB terms
Total bases (TB)
Sum of hits weighted by base value: single = 1, double = 2, triple = 3, home run = 4. A common batter prop.
ERA (Earned Run Average)
Runs allowed by a pitcher per 9 innings, excluding runs caused by errors. Lower is better. Under 3.0 is elite, over 4.5 is below average.
WHIP (Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched)
How many baserunners a pitcher allows per inning. Under 1.10 is elite, over 1.35 is below average.
K/9 (Strikeouts per 9 innings)
A pitcher's strikeout rate normalized to a nine-inning start. High K/9 (over 10.0) means fewer balls in play, which tends to suppress hits and total bases props.
Platoon splits
How a batter performs against left-handed vs right-handed pitchers. Most batters hit better against opposite-hand pitchers (a right-handed batter vs a left-handed pitcher = "cross-hand" matchup).
Same-hand matchup
Right-handed batter vs right-handed pitcher, or lefty vs lefty. Typically a slight disadvantage for the batter.
Cross-hand matchup
Right-handed batter vs left-handed pitcher, or vice versa. Typically favorable for the batter.
Park factor
A number that captures how much a specific ballpark inflates or suppresses offense. Coors Field runs about 1.28 (28% more offense than average), while Petco Park runs about 0.94. EdgeAI uses park factors for hits, total bases, and runs props.
NBA / NHL / NFL terms
Points+Rebounds+Assists (PRA)
Combined NBA prop. Adds a player's points, rebounds, and assists into one over/under total.
Usage rate
NBA metric measuring how often a team's possessions end with a specific player's shot, turnover, or trip to the foul line. High usage = more scoring opportunities.
TOI (Time on Ice)
Minutes a hockey player is on the ice. Correlates strongly with shot volume and points.
Save percentage (SV%)
Percentage of shots on goal a goalie stops. Elite is above .920.
Shots on target (SOT)
Soccer prop for shots that would score if not saved.
